Cellulite is a common skin condition, affecting nearly 90% of women, in some form. When the bands of fibrous tissue that surround the fat cells are tight, hard or rigid (which occurs when there is damage to the cells), the fat between the muscle and skin bulges causing the bands to dimple and cellulite to result. Cellulite tends to appear on the upper thighs, butt, stomach and hips, but it can occur anywhere on the body.
Although cellulite is due in part to fat, cellulite is not considered to be fat and vice versa. Unlike cellulite, fat provides a purpose within the body. However, in order for cellulite to form, there must be swollen fat cells. But fat and cellulite don't function alike or even have the makeup. In fact, many women who are thin are affected by cellulite and in some cases, those who are heavier are not.
Trough the use of radio-frequency energy, infrared heat and/or light, you can reduce the appearance of unwanted cellulite. These treatments work twofold: They penetrate deep within the skin to break up fat and they stimulate collagen and elastin production to tighten up the skin. The Accent XL reduce the size of the fat cells in addition to causing the collagen bands to shrink, effectively reducing the appearance of cellulite. No anesthesia is needed but since the energy source heats up the skin, it can get quite hot. Some patients report the feeling as being similar to a hot stone massage, while others say it is mildly uncomfortable. And, if you have minimal amounts of fat, you may notice more extreme heat since there is less fat to break up. However, once the treatment is complete – which can take anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes or more depending on the size of the area being treated – there is little or no lingering discomfort and only some minor redness that subsides in just hours.
